One supposes that people like self-catering because they enjoy cooking. And if you do, then you’ll love Tangleberry Cottage. Situated forty-five minutes to an hour from Cape Town and 30 minutes from Cape Town International Airport, it’s a self-catering retreat recently established and fitted with excellent cooking equipment and food preparation utensils (click to view list) that would please any gastronome, chef or cook. The 2 bedroom-en-suite cottage, accommodating a maximum of 2 couples, is located in a romantic setting in the heart of the Elgin Valley. It’s completely private – partly encircled by a lake and surrounded by an edible landscape of almonds, walnuts, pecan, avocado, mango, fig, cherry and various fruit trees – all newly planted.

While waiting for the dough to rise for the absolutely sinful ‘chocolate babka’ that you’re planning for breakfast on the 2.5-meter x 1.5-meter granite island top, take a look at the landscape and you’ll see the Groenlandberg and Hottentots Holland Mountains in the North East and the Olifantsberg mountains in the South West, a mere “bird’s throw” to Hermanus and the frolicking whales. This perfect backdrop should inspire you to create delicious dishes with your gathering of fresh ingredients.

Watch the wild ducks waddle across the green lawn or paddle in the dam in front of you while you lunch on your enviable bounty. You don’t have to look far to spot the hundreds of bird varieties (click to view) that live and visit Elgin. And if you want to work up an appetite for dinner, meander along the many walks and hiking trails available. As drinking and driving is prohibitive you’ll find that your walks will conveniently lead you to several nearby wine estates. On your way back to Tangleberry Cottage, just as the sun starts to dip, you’ll experience the country fragrances, dewy fresh grass, the intoxicating aroma of honeysuckle and the sweet blend of various nectarous flowers, all of which will wrap you in its narcotic embrace. So intoxicating will the experience be, it will begin to stir up thoughts of the evening’s gastronomic pleasures.

After the first winter rains, forage for a variety of wild mushrooms (click to read) that are strewn across Elgin’s’ forests floors. Chocolate-scented Pine Boletus are so delicious in puff pastry tartlets. Or, pan-fried in garlicky butter and tossed with Pappardelle and freshly grated Parmesan cheese. Otherwise, sip wine while stirring up a fragrant risotto.

You may choose to toss the tea out of tea-time and rather, sip Champagne or an excellent Cap Classique while twirling your toes in the lake from the jetty’s edge. And if the weather turns chilly, sink deeply into the buttery-soft leather sofas placed invitingly before an original two meter wide wood burning fireplace conveniently equipped with an overhead steel bar with cast iron pots for the comforting casseroles or “potjies” you love to cook. The homely feel is continued in the local hand-made terra-cotta tiles complemented by American oak wood paneled floors.

And when all your senses are replete, you’ll be sung to sleep by the chorus of ‘The Singing Cape Ghost Frogs’ while snuggled up in quality percale bed linen in the comfortable queen-size beds.[

Please note pets are guests responsibility for damage.

Gourmet Indoor Kitchen – A 5 plate gas hob and gas oven. Extensive range of cooking equipment, appliances and food preparation utensils (Click to view list). Large wood-burning fireplace for delicious potjies or casseroles. 1.5 meter x 2.5 meter granite Island.

Why do the world’s best chefs choose gas? The reason is simple:
* There’s greater control over the temperature.
* Faster cooking times.
* Immediate and visual heat.
* Roasts are much juicier than when cooked in electric ovens.

Gourmet Outdoor Cooking Facilities includes a 900 mm wide wood burning oven and a traditional braai.

If you want to venture beyond pizzas, then why not bake beautiful breads – sweet savory kitkes, sourdough, French Baguettes, fragrant brioche, parathas, corn bread, or perhaps something unusual like Orange Pecan Tea bread or Roast Zucchini Coconut bread? Or turn out golden roasted vegetables, melt-in-your-mouth roasts and delicious pies. You can even enjoy guilty pleasures like creamy risottos, buttery paellas and smoked cheesecake with dollops of silky smooth Belgian dark chocolate laced throughout. Cooking in a wood burning oven or an open fire brings out unique flavours in each dish; the dry moist heat helps the smoke infiltrate the food, and the dry, humid atmosphere imparts a woody, nutty flavour to the skin on meat and vegetables. Be experimental and indulge.

The open plan country kitchen is adjacent to the sitting room area with an open wood burning fireplace. You’ll find a plentiful supply of chopped wood at a very reasonable price and you could almost play cricket on the large expansive granite central island table-top. But rather use it roll out the pasta – we can supply a pasta machine on request. And taking it a step further, flavour your pasta with beetroot, tomato, saffron, spinach or herbs from the garden. There is a moulli or a food processor to aid you and a range of 25 spices with which to experiment.

Outside Dining furniture is provided by a five piece patio set and umbrella.

Fruit and Vegetable garden – We’ve planted a variety of fruit, vegetables and herbs and when in season you are welcome to pick some for your culinary creations. There is nothing like fruit straight off the tree and vegetables out of the garden and onto your plate.

Appliances Bosch Stainless Steel fridge and freezer / food preparation utensils / ice machine / Rheninghaus 280mm Slicer (on request) / Kenwood Chef (on request) / Russell & Hobbs toaster / Russell & Hobbs coffee machine / Russell & Hobbs bread machine / dishwasher / washing Machine / tumble dryer / microwave / wall heaters in bedrooms and heated towel rails in both bathrooms.

Connectivity – WiFi.

Entertainment Flat screen TV / DSTV / DVD / iPod Dock. There is an additional charge of R50 per day for the DSTV. Please notify prior to arrival.

Tangleberry Cottage is surrounded by fruit orchards and vineyards. When spring arrives you’ll find yourself encircled by a carpet of pastel blossom. Summer brings the colour blue, rosy cheeks and grasshoppers in merry moods. The Overberg holds the largest Blue Crane population in the world and you’ll awake to the sounds of several hundred bird species. All the farms in the area are part of the Groenland Water Scheme and I like to call our delicious, sweet tasting water that flows down through the upper regions of the Hottentots Holland mountains and valleys, ‘Fynbos water’ – it’s cool and sweet as a mountain stream.

As Tangleberry Cottage is half surrounded by water, you will hear the Cape Ghost Frogs in chorus. Rarely seen, their harmony is a deep baritone that takes on a louder pitch in summer as the male frogs go in search of a female companion – love is in the air. Their tenacity runs throughout the night with a melody of croaks and grunts and if not successful that night, throughout the following day.

Psst! If you listen carefully between the froggy croaks at night you may be able to make out the nocturnal African Clawless Otter (Aonyx Cadences). This shy animal is rather slow and clumsy as it prefers to go unnoticed, but keep a sharp lookout for its glowing eyes at night.

Beautiful cottage, lovely fireplace and the most comfortable beds. Fully equipped kitchen with everything that opens and closes. Stunning vegetable garden and best of all is that you can pick vegetables/herbs while staying there.

Idyllic private getaway for food and wine and outdoor enthusiasts
This cottage is so well appointed, totally private, full of exciting surprises like picking and eating organic apples, swimming in the lake and choosing from a vast array of fresh herbs growing in the garden. Not often you get more than you expected. The furniture and fittings are top shelf, so generously kitted out with everything you could possibly want or need! I can’t praise this spot enough! a few points to note: Kitchen, braai area and outside Pizza oven gets 5/5 (even had a bread maker!!!) Leather couches in comfy lounge with fire place and candles gets 5/5 Space and privacy and ambience gets 5/5 and the owner couldn’t be more helpful! So go!!! And you could probably stay there for a month! Next time I’m taking my mountain bike and bringing heaps of food and wine and i’ll stay for a week or two.

“Beautiful large house, amazing kitchen and garden, lovely scenery.”
This is a lovely place to stay for a weekend getaway from Cape Town. It’s modern and spacious, yet also homely, private and peaceful 🙂

Fully equipped kitchen, our own vegetable/fruit/herb garden, braai and wood fire pizza oven, jetty overlooking a little dam, an abundance of apple trees and blackberry bushes a short stroll away, everything you could want for a relaxing, delicious and wine-filled weekend.

It’s also very easily accessible, close to all the Elgin wineries and a large farm stall which serves great coffee 🙂 We hope to return again very soon.

Absolutely awesome! Not often the real thing looks just like the picture… but in this case its EVEN better!! Fantastic location, lots of attention to detail and the fully-equipped kitchen with all its utensils and gadgets would even satisfy Nataniel! And Mike is an awesome host! We enjoyed every minute and will definitely stay there again.

Tangleberry Cottage is a treat of a get-away. Nestled privately in the majestic Elgin Valley, it is luxuriously comfortable, cosy and you’ll love all the home-grown goodies, from lettuce, garlic and spring onions to varied fruits when in season, that you can pick and indulge during your stay. We can’t wait to go back again.

It’s not really about Elgin, where the greens, as Mike Rossi says, are greener in hue and shade and abundance than anywhere else in the country.

Rossi – as I call my friend – is not only an enormously talented photographer, but also a teller of such evocative foodie tales. And he cooks brilliantly – so much so that I can only but pretend to be his sous chef when he cooks.

I’ve had the privilege of dining at Rossi’s and his partner Bonny in Cape Town a number of times. The preparation is part of the thrill because the kitchen is a gourmand’s delight.

This is until I visited Tangleberry Cottage in Rossi’s green Elgin. We turn off the main road into the valley glistening with light refracted from the rains the night before. Blackberries, apple blossom and grape vines.

And in front of us further into the valley, the green-roofed cottage on the edge of a dam. Herbs, lettuces – and more greens – in abundance. We pick arms-full for a salad with supper.

Waterblommetjies, which Rossi sourced, lamb knuckle and merrily clinking bottles of wine are taken into the open-plan kitchen living room. There’s a large en-suite bedroom on either side and I dump my luggage in one and trumpet back to the kitchen and plant myself at the large central island to observe Rossi and Bonny.

This is my first weekend at their Tangleberry Cottage, designed and built especially if you, like me, are desperately tired of smart hotels and guesthouses, or B&Bs with creaky beds and over attentive owners. And of course, true to Rossi style, he’s designed it for the self-catering gourmand.

Rossi starts his chicken stock, which he intends to add to the Waterblommetjies Bredie later. “If you’re planning on a foodie weekend, always start with a stock pot,” he says.

Once the stock was well settled into itself Rossi passed the time preparing this dish, which I said should be called rather prosaically, Rossi’s Sossi.

Rossi came up with a much more charming title: A French beauty seduced by an Italian sausage.

Good Italian sausages (not too salty) and preferably Franco Esposito’s pork and wild boar sausages. Some cloves and sage leaves.

Prick the sassies then seal them by pan-frying them. Chuck in chopped onions and pan-fry. Add some chopped sage with their stalks. Stir and fry for about 10 minutes, then add some salt and baby potatoes.

Add some chicken stock and some wine if you wish. As soon at it simmers, lift the lid and allow to reduce. (Remember sassies burn easily so keep stirring).

Then the rest of the sage. You should now have ended up with a thickish sauce.

We didn’t have any sherry, so Rossi added some grated Granny Smith apples at the end. Genius. The green rounded it off perfectly.

Rossi doesn’t come with the deal, so the next time I’m there I might just do my Forty Cloves of Garlic chicken dish and add white wine from the many glorious estates in the area.

This is a winner.

Amazing experience!
Beautiful house in a great setting with everything you could need and much more. If you need a breakaway don’t want to miss out on anything this is the place to be (DStv, Wi-Fi, fully stocked kitchen, fireplace, braai and pizza oven). This is like a home away from home ,one of the best places I’ve ever stayed.

Tangleberry is a beautiful, very well equipped cottage and every person’s dream – “far from the maddening crowd and unwind” – getaway spot. It was such a delight staying at Tangleberry Cottage, where everything we could of wanted and more, had already been anticipated, so the transition from home to Tangleberry was seamless! Thank you Mike for being such a great host!
Bill & Nancy Nash, Johannesburg, South Africa / September 2015

Lovely cottage in a peaceful area of the Elgin Valley, equipped with the best kitchen amenities one could ask for! Will definitely be back again…
Darryl Kapp / July 2018

This house is the perfect getaway, not too far out of the city. Kitchen is perfect for foodies with lots of fresh produce in the garden. Well equipped and our dogs loved the freedom to run around.
Tammy Lotz / January 2018

All the arrangements that were made beforehand went smoothly. The host’s directions were in the finest detail and the hostess’s carrot cake, on special request, was of top quality! The house is very private and in a quiet area. Bedrooms and bathrooms very clean and tidy, a gigantic fireplace that works well and the best equipped kitchen I’ve ever seen! Long hours on the patio, strolling through the apple orchard, and abundant bird life (two owls kept a watchful eye over us the entire weekend) keeps you busy. Or do completely nothing. We could make use of the vegetable and herb garden. There is nothing better than fresh salads and vegetables out of the garden. We will definitely go there again!
